New Year, Same You?

We all hear this common phrase every time a new year rolls around. “New Year, New Me!” It’s proclaimed with excitement over the new year – that this changeover can and will motivate you to be a different person.

Now, don’t get it twisted – it’s the top of the year so I’m definitely not knocking this new wind but what if the changes you are looking to make don’t have to wait for a new year to load.

A new year can bring a new mindset but if your season changed before the new year did, then you are already behind.

“As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭10‬:‭38‬-‭42‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We can get behind in our seasons because we get distracted like Martha. We do all the right things – as we are accustomed to. We welcome Jesus into our homes – our personal lives, we serve where we can and make actual room for him – but we didn’t actually dwell with Him.

Burnout happens when we bring old patterns into a new season.

It’s not that you were doing anything wrong but you have outgrown this version of you & the old you cannot sustain this new season. We can’t settle for business as usual and not refresh in His presence. You can’t just “do” and not dwell.

Doing is not the better thing – dwelling is. Let your actions follow revelation.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19 NIV

When the Lord wants to do a new thing – it’s actually up to us to catch on.

Just before this verse in Isaiah, The Lord declares who He is as Israel’s only Savior. He recounts His character, sovereignty and His mercy amidst Israel’s unfaithfulness. And even after all that – He tells them to forget the former things – He is doing something new.

So how do we perceive this new season? Revelation. Revelation is the making known of something that was previously secret or unknown. It’s when we see a new side of God – a side that always existed but has finally become obvious to us. Revelation comes from being in His presence.

When we come to realize something new about the God we serve – our actions follow. Revelation leads to surrender. Surrender leads to testimony. Testimony leads to Altars.

“‘Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you.” Exodus 20:24 NIV

How do we get revelation? A simple starting place – Read the Bible, Prayer and Worship – to start.

Just know, wherever the Lord shows up – choose the better thing and get what you need.
